Shane Jones, an artificial intelligence engineer at Microsoft, has sent a series of letters to the chairwoman of the Federal Trade Commission of the United States, Lina Khan, and to Microsoft’s board of directors urging the Redmond company to temporarily withdraw Copilot Designer, an AI image generator, for being capable of creating violent and sexual images with little guidance.

In January, Jones sent another series of letters to several US senators and politicians, as well as to the Attorney General of the State, Bob Ferguson. In them, the Microsoft engineer claimed that, during his investigation in search of vulnerabilities, he found several issues with Designer’s protection barriers, to the point that the AI was capable of creating grotesque and explicit images through simple prompts.

According to CNBC, several of the most controversial results found by Jones involve the prompt “pro-choice” (those who defend the right to abortion), consisting of drawings such as “a demon with sharp teeth about to eat a baby, Darth Vader holding a lightsaber next to mutated babies, and a manual device similar to a drill labeled ‘pro-choice’ being used on an adult baby.”

Jones claims that Microsoft has refused to remove Designer, so now he has asked the company to include new warnings about what the AI can create, and also to change the classification of the Android app so that it is not classified in the United States as E (for everyone).
