Rian Johnson has become one of the most important film directors of our era. Johnson is the creator of the Knives Out saga; the director behind Star Wars Episode VIII; the filmmaker of one of the best series of last year, Poker Face; and the director responsible for two of the best episodes of Breaking Bad: Fly and Ozymandias.
It’s now beyond question that his career couldn’t be more fruitful, yet the truth is that he has shown signs of greatness since 2005, when he directed his first film, Brick. This mystery thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt was recently added to the Amazon Prime Video catalog, and it’s definitely worth watching by as many viewers as possible.
Why should you watch Brick, by Rian Johnson?
The story of Brick follows Brendan Frye (Gordon-Levitt), a lonely high-school student who becomes an amateur detective to investigate the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend, Emily (Emilie de Ravin). Before long, Brendan finds himself immersed in the dark and dangerous underworld of his high school, where he encounters drug dealers, bullies, and other suspicious characters. With the help of his friend Brain (Matt O’Leary), Brendan follows a series of cryptic clues that lead him to uncover the truth behind Emily’s disappearance and unravel a web of corruption and deceit.
Undoubtedly, Brick stands out for its stylized dialogue and dark tone, evoking the spirit of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett’s classic detective novels, but transposed onto a contemporary setting of high-school teens. With a clever script that has made Johnson’s career a delight to behold, it’s definitely one of the movies you shouldn’t miss on Amazon Prime Video.
