Not too long ago, we announced with great fanfare a new Netflix series that promised to become one of the jewels of the streaming platform. The Sun Brothers, a martial arts drama series starring the Oscar-winning Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) in the cast, was released in January. However, after its first season, Netflix has announced that there will not be a second season.

Despite being in the global Top 10 on Netflix for up to five weeks, The Brothers Sun’s audience numbers have not been enough to validate its renewal. It only managed to accumulate 17.2 million views in those five weeks, a figure well below other series such as Avatar: The Last Airbender or Griselda, which have surpassed it in just a few days. Therefore, the VOD service has decided not to renew it.

The third series that is canceled for Michelle Yeoh after one season

Despite the poor results, The Brothers Sun is a series that received very positive reviews. It reached an 80% critical approval on Rotten Tomatoes, and public support grew even further to reach 91%. That means that those who watched the series were absolutely delighted with it, but unfortunately it hasn’t been able to conquer a new audience that would have made Netflix satisfied with the final outcome.

“It will take me some time to digest this news, but I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your love and support for the series“, Justin Chien communicated in a message of gratitude through his social media. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like the situation will be reversed anytime soon.

On the other hand, it seems that Michelle Yeoh’s career after the Oscar is somewhat cursed. Both The Witcher: Blood Origin and American Chinatown: The Series were canceled after one season. Her third opportunity has not gone well either, so it is not very clear what will happen to her in the future.
