Apple has updated the MacBook Air with the release of new models equipped with the M3 chip, marking a significant evolution compared to the previous generation with M2 chips. The choice between getting a MacBook Air M2 or opting for the latest M3 version is a relevant decision, especially considering the differences in performance, features, and also price. Performance: Chip M2 vs. M3
The most notable leap between the two generations is found at the heart of the device: the Apple silicon chip. The MacBook Air M3 receives the M3 chip, based on the 3nm manufacturing process, which brings superior performance compared to the M2 chip, with improvements in single-core and multi-core tasks of approximately 17% and 21%, respectively. The new machines are also more efficient in machine learning and artificial intelligence tasks, thanks to a 15% faster Neural Engine.
Memory, Connectivity, and Other Differences
Both chips support up to 24GB of unified memory, but the M3’s more advanced manufacturing process allows for better utilization of memory bandwidth, resulting in an overall performance improvement, even though the numbers on paper are the same. In terms of connectivity, the MacBook Air M3 advances with support for Wi-Fi 6E, compared to the Wi-Fi 6 of the M2, allowing for a faster and more stable internet connection, especially in areas with many available networks.
The M3 also supports up to two external screens when the lid is closed, an advantage when we require multiple monitors for our workflow. In addition, after the discontinuation of the 15-inch MacBook Air M2, if we want to opt for the larger size, our only option is the MacBook Air M3. On the other hand, and going into more aesthetic details, the new anodized finish of this MacBook Air makes it more resistant to fingerprints. Finally, the new model enjoys an improved microphone system, which improves audio clarity and also voice isolation modes.
The choice between the MacBook Air M2 and M3 will depend on our specific needs, our budget, and the importance we give to performance and future features that may come through software updates. In this sense, while the M2 remains a solid option, the M3 represents a step forward in terms of capacity and efficiency and is the most capable MacBook Air we can buy.
